Tonight we saw twenty-six archers shoot a Worcester round. Once again we just managed to squeeze this five dozen round into the two-hour time slot.
It's now incredibly tight in divisions one, three and four. Only division two has a leader with a commanding lead. There is still honour to play for in who can secure second place.
Congratulations to Chris Baigent who shot an amazing 297 out of 300. We are awaiting confirmation from our Records Officer as to whether this is a new club record. Those three stray arrows have got to hurt though, maybe the next Worcester on 28th will see a perfect round?

Next week 7th Feb is a practice night, but also a chance to make up a missing round if you wish.
League Night 10 will be on Feb 14th, so there might just be a theme and some heart-shaped bonus points on offer.

After 8 Rounds, 2 weekend extras and the Indoor Championships here is how the Winter League is looking
Indoor League Standings After Round 8 (24-01-2023)
It's very close in Division 1 with Stuart Thomas taking the lead after shooting a superb '270' personal best (according to the records).
Division 2 is less close with Darren Firth disappearing over the horizon. The lead is not completely unassailable, but with Darren also shooting a personal best of '213' it's going to be a challenge for the chasers.
Division 3 has a new leader, Hannah Diffey, who has finally put the competition behind her with a personal best of '159'.
Division 4 is very close, with Tony Silver's stunning shooting and performance points from Round 2 keeping him just ahead.
We still have 5 league nights and one weekend extra to go, so it's still all to play for. Next up is Round 9 on 31st Jan, we will be shooting a Worcester Round. Divisional Trophies will be awarded at the AGM at the end of March. Date to be announced soon. Please also note a change to the calendar, the 'weekend extra' planned on Sat 11th Feb has now moved to Sun 12th Feb. We will be shooting a WA25.
All members welcome.

No lazing
on this Sunday afternoon, twenty six archers lined up to shoot a Portsmouth Round for the 2023 indoor club championship. The venue might have been cold, but the competition was hot.
There were plenty of trophies on offer both for raw scores and handicap adjusted scores.
It was great to see the Compound category for Junior Male revived after being absent from the trophy table since 2012 (actually it was still absent as our Tournament Officer had forgotten it was still in the clubhouse loft). Also fantastic to see a new name raising the bar and topping the Ladies Recurve category. The senior recurve handicap trophy was won by an archer shooting a brand new bow for the first time. I think it's fair to say it was a good buy. No spoilers you can click on the results below.
Two "lads and dads" teams went head to head for the Parent and Child Trophy and two couples for the Partners Trophy. Thirteen pairs competed for the mixed pair handicap. A prize pot of £46 for best gold was split across three categories; so the beers are on Chris Baigent (recurve) and Mick Hayman (longbow), the lemonades are on Max (compound).
All trophy and medal winners received their awards from our Lady Paramount, Hannah Diffey. The final prize of the day was the Lady Paramount Prize which was awarded to our tournament organiser and gratefully received with much blushing.

After a short pause for Christmas and New Year our indoor shooting calendar has restarted. The first session after the break was a practice session and we had twenty archers back in action. Most people used this as an opportunity to tighten up their 'Portsmouth' skills ahead of the indoor club champs. Four archers used this session as a catch-up session for League nights that had been missed.
A reminder that there is no Indoor Shooting this Tuesday (17th Jan) due to the hall being set-up for exams.
The upcoming sessions are:-
Sunday 22/1/23 3pm - Indoor Championships (Portsmouth Round)
Tuesday 24/1/23 6.45pm - Indoor League Round 8 (Bray I)
Tuesday 31/1/23 6.45pm - Indoor League Round 9 (Worcester)
Tuesday 7/2/23 6.45pm - Practice Night
(all dates can be found in the events calendar on the club website here (you need to be signed in)
