With equipment donated by a local resident and Sway Football Field as the first venue, Steve and Shirley Gulliver founded Sway Bowmen in 1985. As membership increased the club had the use of Skanlands Farm where we held their first Club Championships. With numbers still increasing Sway Bowmen moved to a permanent site on Birchy Hill where they stayed until 1999. During this time Steve and Shirley were joined by their daughter Katie who went on to shoot for England in 1996, for Great Britain in 1997 and made the National Squad the following year. She also represented Great Britain in 2000.

Having finally moved to Great Break Field on the outskirts of Sway, the club has grown to 120 members enjoying a full outdoor season of shooting and social activities as well as the Mushroom Shoot which is enjoyed by archery clubs from right across the region.

In 2002, with immense sadness, Sway Bowmen mourned the passing of Steve Gulliver after his brave battle with cancer. The legacy he leaves behind is an amazingly successful Archery Club, an extended family of people passionate about their sport.
